| Concerns voiced over Alva Academy opening |
|
Ochil MSP Keith Brown and many other parents of children at Alva Academy were shocked to receive notification by text message that the new school will not be ready as expected on 12 January.
The project is being run through the PPP model introduced by the Labour Council and government, which means the school will be owned and managed by a private business. Delays and overruns in these projects have been common across Scotland.
"Understandably parents and pupils are disappointed that their new school will not be ready in time. I have since received assurances from Clackmannanshire Council that the reasons for the delay are minor and the new building will be ready some time in February.
"This is not untypical of the problems associated with PPP projects, which I spent many years on the Council cautioning against. Like all the parents at Alva I will be keeping a watchful eye on the situation.
The new Scottish Government has been developing a new not-for-profit alternative to PPP within the limited powers of the Scottish Parliament. Since this government took over in May 2007 there have been eleven new school building projects across Scotland, several of them using not-for-profit models, with a total value of around £800m. |
